چکیده

Juan Comesana considers some recent proposals regarding the relation between knowledge and subjunctive conditionals, including those by Dretske and Nozick recommending a " sensitivity " condition on knowledge, and by Sosa recommending a " safety " condition. Comesana raises problems for each of the positions he considers, and at the end of the paper he expresses pessimism about the prospects for alternative proposals along similar lines. I agree with Comesana that the problems he raises for the positions he considers are weighty. Perhaps none of the proposals that get treatment in his paper can withstand the objections he raises against them. On the other hand, the more general claim that Comesana is critiquing is really very weak. That claim is that " there is a constitutive connection between knowledge and the truth of some subjunctive conditional. " Alternatively, " for a subject to know a certain proposition, some subjunctive conditional related to that subject and that proposition has to be true. " Consider: it is more than plausible that knowledge puts the knower in some modal relation to the truth. In cases of knowledge, we think, it is no accident or mere coincidence that S believes the truth. But then shouldn't that alone be sufficient to support some relevant counterfactual? If so, we should be anything but pessimistic about the more general claim at issue. Here is a further thought along the same lines. It is plausible to think that knowledge is grounded in ability: when someone knows something, that person forms her believes through some cognitive or intellectual ability, such as accurate perception or good

Comprehension of factual, nonfactual, and counterfactual conditionals by Iranian EFL learners

A considerable amount of studies have been established on conditional reasoning supporting mental model theory of propositional reasoning. Mental model theory proposed by Johnson- larid and Byrne is an explanation of someone's thought process about how something occurs in the real world. Conditional reasoning as a kind of reasoning is the way to speak about possibilities or probabilities. The a...

A Theory of Conditionals Based on Hierarchies of Situations

We present an approach to the semantics of subjunctive conditionals based on the situation semantics notion of a constraint, in which the connection between antecedent A and consequent B of a conditional ‘if A were the case, B would be’ is an informational relation between types of situations. We also argue that the information contained in a hierarchy of planning schemas as commonly used in Ar...

On the Semantic Composition of Subjunctive Conditionals

In this paper, I offer a unified semantic analysis of subjunctive conditionals that purports to account for their truth and felicity-conditions. The proposal is centered on the claim that the temporal morphology that occurs in subjunctive conditionals in several genetically unrelated languages plays an essential role in the composition of their meaning. I will argue for a time-dependent notion ...

An Information-Based Theory of Conditionals

We present an approach to combining three areas of research which we claim are all based on information theory: knowledge representation in Artificial Intelligence and Cognitive Science using prototypes, plans, or schemata; formal semantics in natural language, especially the semantics of the ‘if-then’ conditional construct; and the logic of subjunctive conditionals first developed using a poss...

RECENT WORK Recent Work: Dispositions

Controversy about dispositions ranges over the following four domains: (i) the semantics of disposition ascriptions; (ii) the distinction between dispositional and categorical properties; (iii) the metaphysical status of dispositions, i.e. their fundamentality, naturalness and intrinsicness; and (iv) the various dispositional analyses of philosophical notions like causation, laws, modality, cou...
